Large Pine and Maple Tree Removal Around Power Lines
April 8, 2026
Recently in Denton, MD our team completed a tree removal where one of the trees, a Loblolly Pine, was growing into the power lines. The tree had grown close enough to the main distribution lines that it needed to be taken down to eliminate the hazard. We coordinated the work with the local utility to make sure the removal could be done safely and in compliance with Maryland regulations.
Safety and compliance were the top priorities on this project. Although Rob and Michael are EHAP certified, which stands for Electrical Hazard Awareness Program, Maryland law does not allow work within 10 feet of energized power lines. Because of that restriction we worked with the power company to arrange a temporary shutdown of power to the area. The outage lasted about two hours, which gave us a safe window to remove the portions of the tree that were in and around the lines.
Coordinating with the electricity provider is an important part of any tree trimming or tree removal project near distribution lines. In this case the power company has recently implemented a new scheduling system for these situations, so the outage was arranged fairly quickly. We stayed in close contact with the utility during the entire process, so crews knew exactly when the lines would be de-energized and when the power could be safely restored.
Once the power was shut off, our crew removed the sections of the Pine that were encroaching on the power lines. After the tree was cleared from the line, the power company reconnected service, which allowed us to finish any remaining work and clean up the area. The shutdown was limited to about two hours, minimizing inconvenience to neighbors while ensuring the work met safety and legal requirements.
